Felton Academy is well known providers of conceal firearm permit courses for VA but also many other states like Oregon, Wyoming, and Iowa. A great number of people who visit out website have questions about – What does it mean to have a concealed carry permit? Owning a concealed carry permit means that you’re permitted to carry a handgun in your person or anywhere near you in public areas. State jurisdictions vary greatly on this issue so it is essential that you know what laws are being practiced in your area.

In some localities, the concealed carry permit isn’t only applied to handguns but also to other self-defense products like chemical sprays. However, in all 50 states, carrying weapons is generally allowed but doing so is still under a handful of regulations.

There are 4 licensing policies enforced in every state and an individual’s capacity to bring a concealed weapon may be subject to these policies. These are:

  1. Unrestricted

Only a handful states issue unrestricted concealed weapon permits, which means no permission is needed to carry a handgun. A person may do so at his sole discretion.

  1. Shall-issue

Under this restriction, a permit is required to carry a concealed handgun but there are no restriction in giving out these permits. Any person may request for one and be granted.

  1. May-issue

Here, the permit to carry a concealed gun is issued by the local authorities.

  1. No issue

In no-issue states, nobody is permitted to carry a gun in public areas.

Should You Get A Conceal Handgun Certification?

Generally speaking, bringing a concealed gun in public places is permitted across 50 states. But then again, a majority of them require a permit to do so. Even though you do have the option to skip the licensing phase and just carry a handgun as you desire, there are many advantages to doing the paperwork.

Bringing guns is a big responsibility. It is only right that using it is bound by laws. If you have a handgun for the purpose of self-defense, then you have to be responsible enough to understand when to bring it and when to keep it. Securing yourself and your loved ones must be everyone’s priority.

But because the laws regarding concealed carry can change from one locality to another, having a license assures you peace of mind at all times. This is specially true if you tend to go from one state to another and the guidelines about bringing handguns may change drastically.

The license is a proof that you’re a law-abiding citizen and you do not bring a weapon for no reason. Holding the required licenses shows that you have nothing to hide and you’re using the weapon exactly as how you intended it. The background check that is normally required when asking for a permit shows your true intentions. If you would like more information, please take a look at out blog.

Would Stricter Gun Laws Actually Curb Gun Violence in America?

There has been much debate recently with the upcoming election about gun laws in America. Some politicians and their supporters believe tightening gun laws would make a big difference in reducing gun violence in our country. On the other hand, some believe adding and tightening gun laws would infringe on our rights without making a significant difference on gun violence. Many of this school of thought believe focusing the attention instead on mental health would make more of a difference. Recently the New York Times published a study examining America’s worst shootings in 2015. They examined all 130 shootings in 2015 in which, “four or more people were shot, at least one fatally, and investigators identified at least one attacker”.

The findings of the study were as follows:

  • “In more than half the 130 cases, at least one assailant was already barred by federal law from having a weapon, usually because of a felony conviction”
  • “64 percent of the shootings involved at least one attacker who violated an existing gun law”.
  • “Of the remaining assailants, 40 percent had never had a serious run-in with the law and probably could have bought a gun even in states with the strictest firearm controls”.
  • “Only 14 shootings involved assault rifles, illustrating their outsize role in the gun debate. Nearly every other assailant used a handgun. That is in line with a federal study that concluded that reviving a 1994 ban on assault weapons and ammunition feeding devices that hold more than 10 rounds would have a minimal impact, at best, on gun violence”.

From this study along with many others, it is easy to conclude that criminals typically do not follow the law. As you can see, in the majority of these shootings the attacker violated an existing gun law. It’s true, criminals do violate laws, so enforcing our current gun laws may do far more than adding new ones ever could! Not to mention, we can do this without infringing on our second amendment rights! To me the answer is simple, focusing on mental health and enforcing our existing laws will help make this country a much safer place than adding new gun laws could.
