Felton Training Group is well known providers of conceal gun permit courses for VA but also several other states like Oregon, Wyoming, and Iowa. Many who visit out website have questions about – What does it mean to have a concealed carry permit? Owning a concealed carry permit suggests that you are allowed to bring a gun in your possession or anywhere near you in public areas. State jurisdictions vary significantly on this issue so it is essential that you understand what rules are being practiced in your state.

In certain states, the concealed carry permit isn’t only applied to lethal weapons but also to other self-defense products such as pepper sprays. But in all fifty states, bringing handguns is generally allowed but doing so is subject to a handful of regulations.

There are four permitting policies enforced in each state and your ability to bring a concealed weapon may be subject to these laws. These are:

  1. Unrestricted

Only a handful states issue unrestricted concealed weapon licenses, which means no permission is needed to carry a handgun. A person can bring a gun at his own discretion.

  1. Shall-issue

Under this restriction, a license is required to bring a concealed weapon but there are no restriction in awarding of these permits. Any person may request for it and be approved.

  1. May-issue

Here, the license to bring a concealed gun is approved by the local authorities.

  1. No issue

In no-issue states, nobody is allowed to carry a handgun in public places.

Why You Should Get A Conceal Handgun Certification?

Technically speaking, bringing a concealed weapon in public places is permitted across 50 states. But then, many states require a permit to do so. While you do have the choice to skip applying for a permit and just carry a firearm as you desire, there are a lot of advantages to doing the paperwork.

Bringing firearms is a big responsibility. It’s only right that using it is bound by laws. If you own a handgun for the purpose of protection, then you must be responsible enough to understand when to bring it and when to keep it. Protecting yourself and your loved ones must be everyone’s priority.

But because the laws surrounding concealed carry can be different from one county to another, carrying a license assures you peace of mind at all times. This is especially true if you always go from one state to the next and the guidelines about bringing firearms may change drastically.

The license is the proof that you are a law-abiding citizen and you don’t carry a weapon for no reason. Holding the necessary licenses shows that you have nothing to be afraid of and you are using the handgun in the way you intended it. The background check that is usually required when requesting for a permit shows your true intentions. If you would like more information, please visit at out blog.

Maintaining skills after receiving a Concealed Carry Permit

So you’ve completed your concealed carry training course, received your permit to carry and bought a gun. Now what? Just because you have a permit, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t keep up with your training. The more time that passes, the more we forget. Often the time for self-defense comes when you least expect it and you always want to be prepared. Let’s discuss the best approach to keeping up with your skills after you have received your concealed carry permit.

How often should you train?

Of course, the best answer to this is as much a possible. Now everybody has a busy schedule and making it to the range as often as we’d like is never an easy task. However, having your concealed carry permit is a big responsibility and keeping up with your training is very important. If you are not going to keep up with your training you may want to reconsider the decision to carry. Anyway, if you do plan on carrying, we recommend visiting the gun range at a bare minimum of one to two times per month. If you can, try to go once per week. Remember the more the better, many people practice and train every day. There’s no such thing as over-training!

What to practice when you’re at the range?

When you are first learning to shoot, you are often working on the basic principles or fundamentals, such as keeping a proper stance and grip, breathing techniques and sight alignment. Once you are comfortable with the basics though, it is time to practice more practical techniques for self-defense. Learning skills such as double taps, quick draws, high and low positioning, quick reloads and shooting on the move are examples of useful techniques should that self-defense situation ever arise. Consider taking an advanced course to learn the basics of self-defense with a firearm and then follow up with practice on your own. Be aware of range rules though as different firearm ranges often have different rules regarding allowing quick draws, rapid firing or other types of self-defense training.

When to maintain your equipment?

It is often recommended to clean your firearm after every visit to the range. Now especially if the gun you brought to the range is the same gun you carry or have for self-defense. If that is the case, I would be extra vigilant about maintaining it. Remember, a gun jam at the wrong time could cost lives! My advice: clean and oil it every time you shoot or if its not being used, every several months at a minimum! Ammo kept in a magazine should be replaced every 3 months and ammo kept in cardboard boxes should be replaced annually. Don’t trust your life to old corroded ammunition. Old ammo may typically be discarded at any police station, sheriff’s office, fire station or gunsmith.

Remember, getting that concealed carry permit is just a first step. Following up with your training and maintaining your equipment is just as important! Stay on top of it, work hard and always be prepared!
