Felton Academy is well recognized providers of conceal gun certification courses for Virginia but also several other states like Oregon, Wyoming, and Iowa. Many who visit out website have concerns about – What does it mean to have a concealed carry permit? Owning a concealed carry permit means that you’re allowed to bring a gun in your person or in a close proximity to you in public places. State jurisdictions vary greatly about this matter so it’s important that you learn what laws are being imposed in your county.

In some counties, the concealed carry permit isn’t only applicable to lethal weapons but also to other self-defense products like chemical sprays. However, in all 50 states, carrying guns is normally allowed though doing so is subject to a handful of regulations.

There are 4 licensing policies enforced in every state and your capacity to bring a concealed weapon may be subject to these policies. These are:

  1. Unrestricted

Only a few states allow unrestricted concealed weapon permits, which means no permission has to be sought to carry a handgun. A person may bring a gun at his sole discretion.

  1. Shall-issue

Under this guideline, a license is necessary to carry a concealed weapon but there are no restriction in awarding of these permits. Any individual may request for one and be approved.

  1. May-issue

Here, the license to carry a concealed gun is granted by the local authorities.

  1. No issue

In no-issue states, nobody is permitted to carry a gun in public places.

Why You Should Get A Conceal Gun Permit?

Generally speaking, bringing a concealed handgun in public areas is allowed in all 50 states. But then again, many of them require a license to do so. While you do have the option to skip the licensing phase and just carry a firearm as you wish, there are many benefits to doing the paperwork.

Carrying weapons is a tremendous responsibility. It is only right for its use to be bound by laws. If you own a gun for the purpose of protection, then you must be responsible enough to know when to bring it and when to keep it. Protecting yourself and your loved ones must be everyone’s priority.

However, the laws surrounding concealed carry may change from one city to another, carrying a license assures you peace of mind all the time. This is specially true if you tend to go from one county to another and the laws about carrying handguns may change drastically.

A permit is a proof that you are a law-abiding person and you do not bring a firearm for no reason at all. Having the required permits indicates that you have nothing to be afraid of and you’re using the firearm in the way you intended it. The background check that’s normally required when asking for a permit indicates your pure intentions. If you would like more info, please take a look at out blog.

Maintaining skills after receiving a Concealed Carry Permit

So you’ve completed your concealed carry training course, received your permit to carry and bought a gun. Now what? Just because you have a permit, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t keep up with your training. The more time that passes, the more we forget. Often the time for self-defense comes when you least expect it and you always want to be prepared. Let’s discuss the best approach to keeping up with your skills after you have received your concealed carry permit.

How often should you train?

Of course, the best answer to this is as much a possible. Now everybody has a busy schedule and making it to the range as often as we’d like is never an easy task. However, having your concealed carry permit is a big responsibility and keeping up with your training is very important. If you are not going to keep up with your training you may want to reconsider the decision to carry. Anyway, if you do plan on carrying, we recommend visiting the gun range at a bare minimum of one to two times per month. If you can, try to go once per week. Remember the more the better, many people practice and train every day. There’s no such thing as over-training!

What to practice when you’re at the range?

When you are first learning to shoot, you are often working on the basic principles or fundamentals, such as keeping a proper stance and grip, breathing techniques and sight alignment. Once you are comfortable with the basics though, it is time to practice more practical techniques for self-defense. Learning skills such as double taps, quick draws, high and low positioning, quick reloads and shooting on the move are examples of useful techniques should that self-defense situation ever arise. Consider taking an advanced course to learn the basics of self-defense with a firearm and then follow up with practice on your own. Be aware of range rules though as different firearm ranges often have different rules regarding allowing quick draws, rapid firing or other types of self-defense training.

When to maintain your equipment?

It is often recommended to clean your firearm after every visit to the range. Now especially if the gun you brought to the range is the same gun you carry or have for self-defense. If that is the case, I would be extra vigilant about maintaining it. Remember, a gun jam at the wrong time could cost lives! My advice: clean and oil it every time you shoot or if its not being used, every several months at a minimum! Ammo kept in a magazine should be replaced every 3 months and ammo kept in cardboard boxes should be replaced annually. Don’t trust your life to old corroded ammunition. Old ammo may typically be discarded at any police station, sheriff’s office, fire station or gunsmith.

Remember, getting that concealed carry permit is just a first step. Following up with your training and maintaining your equipment is just as important! Stay on top of it, work hard and always be prepared!
