Felton Training Group is well known providers of conceal weapons permit classes for VA but also many other states like Oregon, Wyoming, and Iowa. A great number of people who visit out website have questions about – What does it mean to have a concealed carry permit? Having a concealed carry permit means that you are allowed to carry a handgun in your person or anywhere near you in public areas. State jurisdictions vary greatly on this issue so it’s important that you understand what rules are being practiced in your area.

In certain cities, the concealed carry permit isn’t only applied to guns but also to other self-defense products such as pepper sprays. But in all fifty states, carrying weapons is generally permissible but doing so is still under certain regulations.

There are 4 licensing policies imposed in each state and an individual’s ability to bring a concealed weapon may be subject to these laws. These are:

  1. Unrestricted

Only a handful states issue unrestricted concealed weapon permits, which means no permission is needed to carry a handgun. An individual may do so at his sole discretion.

  1. Shall-issue

Under this policy, a license is required to bring a concealed gun but there will be no discretion in giving out these licenses. Any person may apply for one and be granted.

  1. May-issue

Here, the license to bring a concealed gun is approved by the police.

  1. No issue

In no-issue states, nobody is allowed to bring a handgun in public areas.

Should You Get A Conceal Firearm Permit?

Generally speaking, carrying a concealed handgun in public areas is permitted across fifty states. However, many of them require a license to do so. While you do have the choice to avoid applying for a permit and just bring a gun as you wish, there are several advantages to going through the paperwork.

Bringing weapons is a huge responsibility. It is only right that using it is bound by laws. If you have a gun for the purpose of self-defense, then you have to be responsible enough to know when to bring it and when to keep it. Protecting yourself and your loved ones should be everyone’s priority.

But because the laws surrounding concealed carry can be different from one locality to another, having a permit assures you peace of mind all the time. This is specially true if you tend to go from one county to the next and the laws about bringing weapons may differ.

A license is a proof that you are a responsible citizen and you don’t carry a firearm for no reason at all. Having the required licenses indicates that you have nothing to hide and you’re using the weapon exactly as how you intended it. The background check that is normally required when asking for a permit speaks highly of your true intentions. If you would like more info, please visit at out blog.

Concealed Carry and Traffic Stops

When I teach classes I often get questions on how to properly handle getting pulled over by the police while carrying a concealed weapon or having a firearm in your vehicle. In modern times we seem to be seeing many tragedies in situations as such. Lets discuss both the law and how we recommend handling these situations.

As most of you know, laws vary from state to state. Some states require you to disclose to the officer if you have a firearm in the vehicle immediately upon getting pulled over. Some states do not. Regardless, in every state if an officer asks if you have any weapons in the car, you are required to answer the question honestly. Honesty will also keep the situation less formal and may earn you some good grace with the officer.

Now, where an issue often lies is when somebody reaches toward their glove box in front of a police officer. I know many people keep vehicle insurance and registration in their glove box. However, many people also keep a firearm in their glove box. Therefore, when a police officer asks you for vehicle registration or insurance it is often natural to want to take it out of the glove box. The problem is that once that glove box is open and your hand is reaching towards it, that officer may very well be thinking you are reaching for the firearm to try and shoot him. You have to remember traffic stops are the most dangerous part of their job and they need to take their own precautions. That is why you never want to reach towards somewhere a firearm might be without first getting the approval of the officer.

Now remember every officer is different and every situation is different. That officer may be having a bad day or maybe it is his first real day on the job. We don’t know what is going on in his mind or in his life. Therefore, let’s discuss what we recommend doing if you get pulled over while carrying a concealed weapon regardless of the officer or even of what state you are in.

Step 1. Open the window all the way and keep your hands on the wheel.

Step 2. Inform the officer that you have firearms in the car and a valid concealed weapons permit (Do NOT reach for your firearms)

Step 3. Ask the officer if you may reach for your wallet to locate and show him your concealed carry permit.

Step 4. Tell the officer where in the car your firearms are located and ask how he would like you to proceed. (Be sure to let him know if your firearms are in the same spot as your registration and insurance, such as the glove box)

Step 5. Follow the officer’s directions (but remember to keep your hands on the wheel unless directed otherwise).

If you remember to follow these 5 steps, it should make every traffic stop simpler, easier, and safer for you, any fellow passengers and the officer.
