Many who visit out website have questions about – What does it mean to have a concealed carry permit? Being granted a concealed carry permit means that you are permitted to bring a handgun in your person or anywhere near you in public areas. State jurisdictions vary significantly about this matter so it’s essential that you understand what laws are being practiced in your locality.

In some counties, the concealed carry permit isn’t only applicable to guns but also to other self-defense devices such as pepper sprays. But in all fifty states, bringing handguns is normally allowed though doing so is subject to certain regulations.

There are 4 licensing policies enforced in each state and an individual’s ability to carry a concealed weapon is subject to these laws. These are:

  1. Unrestricted

Only a few states allow unrestricted concealed weapon licenses, which indicates no permission has to be sought to carry a handgun. One can do so at his sole discretion.

  1. Shall-issue

Under this restriction, a permit is needed to carry a concealed handgun but there are no restriction in awarding of these licenses. Any individual may request for one and be granted.

  1. May-issue

Here, the permit to carry a concealed handgun is approved by the local authorities.

  1. No issue

In no-issue states, no one is allowed to carry a gun in public places.

Should You Get A Conceal Firearm Permit?

Generally speaking, carrying a concealed weapon in public areas is permitted across 50 states. But then again, a majority states require a license to do so. Even though you do have the option to avoid the licensing phase and just carry a firearm as you wish, there are several benefits to doing the paperwork.

Bringing weapons is a tremendous responsibility. It is only right that using it is bound by the law. If you have a gun for the purpose of self-defense, then you have to be responsible enough to know when to use it or when to keep it. Protecting yourself or your loved ones should be everybody’s priority.

However, the laws surrounding concealed carry may be different from one city to another, having a license gives you peace of mind at all times. This is specifically true if you always drive from one state to the next and the rules about carrying guns may differ.

A permit is the proof that you are a responsible citizen and you do not bring a weapon for no reason at all. Holding the necessary permits indicates that you have nothing to be afraid of and you’re using the handgun exactly as how you intended it. The background check that is normally needed when filing for a permit shows your true intentions. If you would like more details, please visit at out blog.

Maintaining skills after receiving a Concealed Carry Permit

So you’ve completed your concealed carry training course, received your permit to carry and bought a gun. Now what? Just because you have a permit, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t keep up with your training. The more time that passes, the more we forget. Often the time for self-defense comes when you least expect it and you always want to be prepared. Let’s discuss the best approach to keeping up with your skills after you have received your concealed carry permit.

How often should you train?

Of course, the best answer to this is as much a possible. Now everybody has a busy schedule and making it to the range as often as we’d like is never an easy task. However, having your concealed carry permit is a big responsibility and keeping up with your training is very important. If you are not going to keep up with your training you may want to reconsider the decision to carry. Anyway, if you do plan on carrying, we recommend visiting the gun range at a bare minimum of one to two times per month. If you can, try to go once per week. Remember the more the better, many people practice and train every day. There’s no such thing as over-training!

What to practice when you’re at the range?

When you are first learning to shoot, you are often working on the basic principles or fundamentals, such as keeping a proper stance and grip, breathing techniques and sight alignment. Once you are comfortable with the basics though, it is time to practice more practical techniques for self-defense. Learning skills such as double taps, quick draws, high and low positioning, quick reloads and shooting on the move are examples of useful techniques should that self-defense situation ever arise. Consider taking an advanced course to learn the basics of self-defense with a firearm and then follow up with practice on your own. Be aware of range rules though as different firearm ranges often have different rules regarding allowing quick draws, rapid firing or other types of self-defense training.

When to maintain your equipment?

It is often recommended to clean your firearm after every visit to the range. Now especially if the gun you brought to the range is the same gun you carry or have for self-defense. If that is the case, I would be extra vigilant about maintaining it. Remember, a gun jam at the wrong time could cost lives! My advice: clean and oil it every time you shoot or if its not being used, every several months at a minimum! Ammo kept in a magazine should be replaced every 3 months and ammo kept in cardboard boxes should be replaced annually. Don’t trust your life to old corroded ammunition. Old ammo may typically be discarded at any police station, sheriff’s office, fire station or gunsmith.

Remember, getting that concealed carry permit is just a first step. Following up with your training and maintaining your equipment is just as important! Stay on top of it, work hard and always be prepared!
